YARN COMPANY: QUINCE & CO.16 jul. 2015
In the previous post I wrote about the American knitwear designer Pam Allen. Now, I will talk about her company, whose linen I'm using for the Azalea top: Quince & Co. As I said, it started in 2010 after Pam and the owner of an old spinning mill became business partners. Now, they work with several manufacturers, and with sheeps, alpacas and angora goats 100% American. By this way, they try to achieve part of the textile industry in their country, which is in decline due to the globalization. And this is possible thanks to their popular products and their great talent.
However, cost of labor and environmental standards raise their prices. But Quince & Co. turned this handicap into a competitive advantage by taking it on its own business philosophy: eco-friendly products and decent labor. This fact and other factors like producing in a higher scale than the artisanal, a wise marketing work, a great product, and an awesome advertising style, let them balance prices.
Apart from animal fibres, Quince & Co. also use linen. Organic linen production doesn't exist in the US, so they buy it in Belgium, one of its leading producers. And spin it in Italy, with great textile tradition.

As you can see, I admire Quince & Co., despite of having only used its linen Sparrow. I think they usually develop very intelligent business strategies. For example, have you ever seen how many top knitwear designers work with them? Veronik Avery, Olga Buraya-Kefelian, Veera Välimäki, Hanna Fettig, Gudrun Johnston, Melanie Berg, Michiyo, Bristol Ivy... And, what about their photography? The aesthetic given by the photographer and designer Carrie Bostick Hoge to the company images is amazing and still noticeable, though she works with its own brand now. And, have you checked Quince & Co. Instagram account? They usually regram their follower's photos as if they were real stars.

Lots of fashionable values define Quince & Co: its clean and minimalist designs, soft, dusty and varied colors of their yarns, the perfect but natural photography, their environmental awareness, their sustainable use of the global economical system, their artisanal halo... A modern and inspiring company.
